Well, I want to set the record straight on the Apple Cup. I didn't see much of the game, as I was at a soccer game. I saw part of the first UW drive, then listened to most of the 1st quarter on my car as I was driving to the game. I got in my car after the game with 4 minutes left, WSU leading 20-10, and the UW at the 8 yead line. "Well, it looks like Rose Bowl for the Cougs." I thought.
I consider myself a Cougars fan. I always have rooted for the Cougs against the Huskies. The Cougars are a bunch of losers, they are a bunch of chokers. There is a reason "Couging it" exists in the vernacular. They didn't lose because the referrees screwed them, they didn't lose because Gesser was hurt -- althoughthose things certainly helped -- they lost because the Huskies practicaly handed them a win, and they didn't take it.
The Huskies' kicker missed his first 3 field goals. With WSU leading 17-10 in the 4th quarter, they took over at the 1, the UW 1, 1 god-damn yard from the end zone, after a muffed Huskies punt attempt. The result: a penalty, a sack, and a field goal, and a missed opportunity to seal the game. Even then, after a penalty on the ensuing kick return, the Huskies started at the 8. Leading by 10, 4 minutes left in the game, opponent at the 8, 92 yards away from the TD. You would take that scenario any time. It means you are going to win.
And they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. They Couged it. They absolutely, completely gagged it.
Cougars fans will be bitching about this for years, blaming it on the refs, blaming ot on the fact that backup QB Matt Kegel was dowright incompetent (and he was, but imagine how he feels tonight, I'd keep the poor kid on suicide watch practically) but that simple fact is, they pulled a choke job for the ages. Cougars fans neeed to remember, and this will be a painful reminder, that they are the banished little brother, and the Huskies put them in their place.
